Minors and the law
Labor laws govern minors work activities. If you are under 18 years of age, you cannot be at a construction site unless your Parent or Guardian signs a waiver (Parents and Teachers, you will be interested in this information). Print and fill out a Youth Waiver and Consent Form.
Do you attend Burroughs High School?
Burroughs High School has a Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter. Members of this group help us with fund raising and with tasks appropriate to their age group. Here is how they have helped and what they are currently doing. The chapter ‘goes dark’ during the summer months. Watch for Sign-up Dates at School
Ages 16-17
You may perform general construction work, but may not engage in hazardous activities such as use of power equipment, motor vehicles, demolition, roofing and excavations without a qualified instructor or supervisor.
Ages 14-15
- May engage in limited activities such as clearing lots, landscaping, and site cleanup after regular working hours. Must be supervised by a Habitat representative.
- Coordinate a birthday gift project for partner family children
- Bake cookies for Habitat mid-morning breaks.
Ages 12-13
- Build birdhouses as housewarming gifts.
- Write a Habitat news article for the class or school newspaper.
- Design and sew a banner to be used at Habitat exhibits.
Ages 10-12
- Make a presentation to classmates about the mission of Habitat with the help of a Habitat representative.
- Learn about another country where Habitat builds and coordinate a fundraiser to sponsor a home there.
- Help with mailings.
Ages 7-10
- Write scriptures, messages, or blessings on 2x4s after framing the house.
- Coordinate a birthday gift project for partner family children.
- Bake cookies for Habitat mid-morning breaks.
Ages 5-7
- Make a welcome basket for the homeowner family and present it at a home dedication ceremony.
- Sing at a home dedication.
- Collect piggy bank pennies to donate to HFHIWV.
