Ongoing Volunteer Needs 2009
Seeking Volunteers. Habitat for Humanity of the Indian Wells Valley is seeking volunteers, who share our commitment to building decent, affordable homes with families in need in our valley. You could help in the following areas:
July 22, 2009
New Lots Prepared for Building. Three new lots are being filled and graded for our next three houses on Oregon Avenue. In the meantime our plans are being reviewed by Bruce Keith, Architect, in Bakersfield to bring them up to date with the latest building code and energy code revisions. We hope to start our next house as soon as the new plans are completed and approved by the City.
Anonymous Donation. In other news, we were pleased to receive a recent donation of $50,000 towards our Fund for Humanity. The donation was anonymous, but to whomever it was we say many thanks. We can only assume the donation was from someone who truly understands our Habitat for Humanity mission so they know how important such a donation is to our continuing work. We will put the money to good use on our next houses.

A young Girl Scout from Tustin recently sent in a donation to Habitat IWV. She explained that each girl in her scout troop had picked a charity for which to raise money. With her check, sent through a Ridgecrest resident to whom she is related, she said, "I picked Habitat for Humanity because you are giving homes" [to people]. We thank her for her concern for people without decent affordable homes, and for her donation to Habitat for Humanity IWV.

Thank you to Chuck Cordell of Cordell Construction Co. and the many professional hands and hearts who are giving so generously of their time and talent to make home ownership a reality for the family of Rebecca Bachinski. "What Habitat Means to Me" by 11-year-old award-winning Logan Bachinski
Day 7, June 6, 2008: The color coat was applied to the stucco. Appliances, countertop were installed. The yard was landscaped, the carpet layed, touch up painting done, cleanup done on windows. Cooler and furnace installed. We declared the house complete upon carpet installation!
Day 6, June 5, 2008: We installed the laundry room bifold doors, door casings, base boards, vanity cabinets, sinks, and toilets. We installed a water heater and the finish mechanical items, such as registers and Updux. Door knobs were put in place throughout the house. We caulked, painted the prime coat, and the finish coat. We were able to finish the painting today thanks to the assistance of the professional painters. And the backyard was leveled. Yesterday's bad winds subsided today, and we were able to spray paint the eaves. The electricians completed most of the finish electrical items, such as fans, lights, switches, and receptacles. Finally we cleaned up, and cleaned up, and cleaned up!
Day 5, June 4, 2008: Today's focus was on finish carpentry and stucco. We hung all of the doors and installed all the cabinets. The first coat of stucco was applied. We also installed the window sills, most of the door casings, and about a third of the baseboard. Today's 40 mph winds made for miserable working conditions for those having to deal with the outside elements.
Day 4, June 3, 2008: The garage door was installed, most of the roofing is in place; taping, mudding, texturing are completed; floor tiles in the bathrooms and kitchens are being completed as this is being written.
Day 3, June 2, 2008: We passed our rough-in inspections at about 7:30 a.m. and the insulators completed their work by noon. After lunch, three wallboard companies brought crews in and hung essentially all of the drywall by 5 p.m. There is about one hour of drywall work left. Taping and mudding began as rooms were completed.
Day 2, June 1, 2008: The rough-in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing are complete.
Day 1, May 31, 2008: Becky's house has been framed, trusses set, roof sheathing completed. the rough-in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing were completed day 2. We are well on our way to completing a house in 8 days.
